Matt just finished telling us about his great new internet job. Then he ask me, "So Jason what have you been up to lately?"

As good friends from school a group of us get together a couple times a year at our old hangout. Our jobs differ from banker, to engineer, to CPA and so forth. It's a pretty sharp group.

I said, "Not long ago I started a new job as a car salesman."

First there was dead silence around the large table. Then someone burst out saying, "You're too honest to sell cars, you wouldn't even cheat on a quiz in school." Everyone had a good laugh nodding in agreement.

I then heard Kathy whisper to Matt, "Jason is not the high pressure type he will never make it selling cars."

I said, "I've been selling cars for six months and would agree there are dealerships in Phoenix that have dishonest, high pressure salespeople. Fortunately, I don't work at one of those. We deal in a no pressure straightforward way. In fact if a salesperson cheated or lied to a customer, my dealership would part ways with them immediately. That's a big reason I work there."

Then Ted the banker piped in, "I've known several people in Phoenix, including my cousin, who said they applied to one of those car job ads promising a high paying career - BIG money. But after several months of making little money they left disappointed."

I explained, "I've read those same gimmick classified ads, 'no experience $6,000 guaranteed income, or $100K per year' and I've known good people who discovered the hard way the fine print those ads left out."

My dealership started me out with a good pay guarantee, top training and solid benefits to give me time to learn the business. Then, when I was ready, they moved me up to an even higher commission based pay.

I laughed and said, "I should have known you guys would demand proof." Their timing was perfect. I just got paid so I decided to make the most of the Ted's challenge. I pulled my pay stub out of my wallet held it in both hands and snap it for drama a few times. First I passed it slowly buy Ted's face then by the others near me.

Instantly a tense silence fell upon the group as all eyes were glued to my pay stub. Mark the CPA broke the silence when he asked, "Did you say you were a manager? That's the kind of money managers at our firm make." I assured Mark I was only a six month salesman rookie.

The skeptical attitude around the table quickly changed then someone eagerly asked, "How did you find such a place to work?"

The engine I'm sure feels quieter and more responsive and the temperature has lowered some margin. With less carbon emissions I feel like I'm doing my bit for the environment but I can't lie and tell you that real reason why I installed this hybrid conversion kit was to help mother earth.

With my wife barking in my ear about trading in our car for some Toyota Yarris- God Forbid! It was with trepidation that I followed my sons advice. The clever little chap sure wasn't kidding about reducing my gas bill though.

Whether Ubers trial works out or Lyfts prediction comes true will not matter if consumers reject driverless cars; 58% of consumers report being very concerned or highly concerned about IoT cyber security. If consumers do not feel that autonomous cars are safe, they will refuse to buy them or even ride in them. Car manufacturers cannot afford to take a lackadaisical attitude toward cyber security. Autonomous vehicles should be subjected to a comprehensive security evaluation and testing process, and businesses that intend to purchase driverless cars should hold off on purchasing vehicles that havent been proven safe.

After watching an episode of top gear, where Mr. Clarkson proclaimed that cows produced more harmful greenhouse gases than cars and should be banned or a carbon tax imposed, I decided to do some research to find out the "truth" about the car versus car battle of the Methane Gas. The first strange fact was that it wasn't farting cows that were the problem it was their bad breath. Cows produced 80% of their methane production from their breathing rather than their farts.

The Maths and Statistics Bit:

I tracked down some facts and figures. The average petrol car produces about 20 pounds of carbon dioxide per gallon, say at a very good 40 mpg and an average 10,000 miles per year, each car produces 10,000/40x20= 4100 pounds of carbon dioxide.

The average cow is said to produce 100 kilogram's of methane per year, although figures varied wildly depending on the studies I went for a mid range estimate. So converting kilo's to pounds 100 x 2.2 = 220 pounds of methane is produced by the average cow.

Then how do we equate methane as a pollutant to carbon dioxide, is this apples and oranges. Well after further research it appears that studies indicate that methane is 20 times more harmful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Therefore the average car produces 4100 pounds of greenhouse contaminant per year and the average cow produces 4400 pounds of greenhouse gas contaminant per year.

Conclusion:

Cows and cars probably produce similar amounts of greenhouse gas contaminants per year. However estimates of the number of cars in the world vary from 5-600m and the number of cows are estimated at 1.5bn so the conclusion has to be that cows are more harmful to the environment than cars.

Serious research is underway to try to tackle the problem. A Welsh University is looking at garlic to neutralise the gas in the cows stomachs, they have 4. In New Zealand they were going to introduce a flatulence tax. Recent research by an Irish University is trying to identify the causes and modify the cows diet to reduce the harmful emissions.

The cost of exotic vehicles is OUTRAGEOUS. If I owned an exotic vehicle, I would have to live, work, eat, and do ungodly things in my car to afford it. If it was fully loaded, it would cost about three life insurance policies and a contract with the devil.
