The History of the Ford Pinto - One of the Worst Cars Ever Made

The History of the Ford Pinto - One of the Worst Cars Ever Made
The History of the Ford Pinto - One of the Worst Cars Ever Made

The Ford Pinto was Ford's first domestic subcompact car. It was marketed in 1970 with competitors being the AMC Gremlin, Chevrolet Vega and imports from Volkswagen, Datsun and Toyota. It was a very popular car with 100,000 units delivered by January 1971. A version produced under the Lincoln Mercury name was called the Bobcat.

The Pinto used powertrains proven in Europe but the Vega had an innovative aluminum engine that caused problems. Robert Eidschun's design of the exterior of the Pinto was chosen which was unusual because most cars consist of style elements from many designers. The Ford Pinto offered an inline 4 engine and bucket seats. And entry level Pinto was $1,850 which made it the cheapest Ford since 1958.

Seating in the Pinto was low to the floor compared to the imports. Body styles were the two door coupe, a hatchback called the Runabout and a two door station wagon. A top of the line Pinto Squire had faux wood sides. Road & Track magazine did not the suspension and standard drum brakes but loved the 1.6 L Kent engine. The Pinto was available with a choice of two engines and Ford changed the power ratings practically every year. The Ford Pinto Pangra is a modified sporting Pinto produced by Huntington Ford in California and only 55 were sold in 1973.

The Ford Pinto is most well known for it's design problem that allowed the fuel tank to be easily damaged in a rear end collision. Deadly fires and explosions were common occurrences in rear end collisions. The Pinto had no real bumper or reinforcing structure between the rear panel and gas tank. In some collisions the gas tank would be thrust forward into the differential which had protruding bolts that could puncture the tank. Also the doors could jam during an accident due to poor reinforcement. This led to the Pinto's nickname as a barbeque that seats four.

The Ford Pinto memo is the cost benefit analysis that Mother Jones magazine obtained that they claimed Ford used to compare the cost of an $11 repair to the monetary value of a human life. This characterization of Ford's decision as a disregard for human life led to lawsuits though Ford was acquitted of criminal charges. The NHTSA ruled in 1974 that the Pinto had no recallable problem but in 1978 Ford initiated a recall providing a dealer installable safety kit that put protective plastic material over the sharp objects thereby removing the risk of a gas tank puncture.

The Ford Pinto has the dubious honor of being on Time magazine's list of the fifty worst cars of all time.

The History of Classic Ford Cars

The History of Classic Ford Cars
The History of Classic Ford Cars

In the world of classic cars, Ford takes the name as the original leader of the American car industry. The company made its debut in 1908 with the delivery of the Model T, which sold more than 10,000 vehicles in its first year. Since then, ford has continued to produce cars and trucks that have become classics in the hearts of Americans from coast to coast.

In the era between 1908 and 1919, the company started marketing a wider variety of vehicles, including the Touring Car, the first Model T pickup, the Speedster, and the sedan, all of which the people of America embraced.

In the 1920's Ford started the manufacturing of the Huckster, the Pie Wagon, and the flatbed truck. The company was growing in popularity and driving in America was becoming more of the standard rather than the luxury. Added to the list of classic Ford cars were names like the Business Coupe, the Woody station wagon, and the Roadster.

By the 1930's, style was becoming a bigger selling point for vehicles, and the list of models that Ford carried was increasing yet. Classic Ford cars from that time period include the Victoria, the Pheaton, the Tudor, and the company's first convertibles.

Newer versions of the Woody, a deluxe version of the Coupe, and a wider variety of trucks became popular in the 1940's. With style and economy in mind, Ford continued to be the leader in the American motor industry.

Classic Ford cars from the 1950's are still among the most favorable today. Models such as the Victoria and the Sedan were still selling strong and new models like the Galexie and the Fairline were put on the market much to the pleasure of Americans. The Ranchero also made its first appearance in the 50's, surprising the world with its half car, half truck design.

In the 1960's, Ford motor company started manufacturing vehicles with more power than those of prior decades. The Galaxie was increasingly popular with Ford fans all across America and the debut of the Torino and the Falcon gave those who were craving a little more speed something to look forward to. Also in the 60's the company marketed its first ton pickups. Many of the vehicles from the 1960's are looked at as the starting point for classic Ford cars, in the eyes of those who crave power.

The company created a reputable name for itself from the time that they first started selling vehicles, and continue to live up to that reputation today. Classic car enthusiasts from all across America have a respect for the name that is unmatched by any of its competitors. Its hard to imagine the Taurus that frequents the streets today, may just be looked as a classic Ford car someday...

The Five Best Colors For Cars

The Five Best Colors For Cars
The Five Best Colors For Cars

Cars serve a variety of services for most Americans. They are the main means of transportation. They also need to look good for most people. Below is a list of my top five car colors when choosing your new set of wheels.

Silver - This color to me is the perfect color. Not too dark, not too light. It's a bold color, but it's also one that won't make you stand out in the crowd too much. The color looks good on just about any style of car as well.

Black - Nothing says slick like a nice black car. The color might be a little too dark, especially at night, but it does a good job of hiding dirt and other marks from everyday use.

White - This is another basic color that still looks pretty nice. The only reason it ranks 3rd is because of the way it will need constant car to keep clean. The plus side of that is you will be more inclined to keep your car looking nice.

Blue - There are a ton of different shades of blue, and my favorite is a little lighter blue, like the sky. It's the top brighter color, so those not that impressed with the boring colors of silver, black and white have a nice option here.

Red - Although it has the reputation of being a car targeted by the police as speeding cars, red ones are very snazzy and eye-catching. This color goes great with all styles, but especially the sporty type.

So there you have it. Most people I think would agree with these five colors, but perhaps not in this order.

The Driverless Car - It Drives Itself!

The Driverless Car - It Drives Itself!
The Driverless Car - It Drives Itself!

Technology has taken us tremendously far over the years. However, this sounds like something right out of  a science fiction movie. Sebastian Thrun has worked remarkably hard to develop the first car that drives itself! That's right, the car drives without you pushing any pedals or turning the wheel. You just sit down and relax.

His passion and determination to help build this car was due to the unfortunate fact that at the age of 18, he lost a close friend in a car accident. From that point on, he decided that he should dedicate his life to try and save the lives of one million people every year. Although he has not achieved that goal yet, he is well on the way.

He saw the concept first in the DARPA Grand Challenge, where the US government funded teams to create a driverless car that could navigate the desert. The hundred teams that showed up failed miserably.

Sebastian and his team made a different self driving car, using different hardware and software and set it free in the desert. It became the first car to ever return from the DARPA Grand Challenge. Their goal is now to develop a driverless car that can drive anywhere, by themselves. Any street in any city, no matter how busy the streets are.

The car is built with sensors, enabling them to see everything around them. They can make their own decisions, about stopping, accelerating, turning and changing lanes. They have driven in several cities including San Francisco through mountain roads, highways and winding streets. They have driven a total of 140,000 miles, without a driver; just the car driving itself. You sit in the driver's seat, as the car navigates itself, accelerating, stopping and turning the wheel.

The leading cause of death for young people is car accidents; the majority of which are caused by human error, not machine error. Sebastian has a hope to leave these accident causing decisions up to robotic precision. This will  prevent the accidents that kill so many people every year.

The technology and precision of a driverless car would result in cars staying in their lanes perfectly. This would allow us to reduce the wifth of lanes, creating more room for other cars and reducing the amount of traffic on our streets.

Although the technology is almost fully developed, it is not yet ready to be put into the hands of consumers and used in our every day lives. The technology of a driverless car must be perfected, and undergo plenty of testing to verify that it will in fact be safe to use.

Imagine 10, 50 or 100 years down the road, looking back at humanity today and thinking, "Wow, I can't believe humans actually drove cars themself back then". The possibility and goal of reducing traffic jams, shortening our commute and most importantly saving the lives of thousands of people every year is truly remarkable.

My hat is off to you Sebastian. Good luck with your technological developments and I commend you for your work in saving the lives of others.

The Clunker Bill For Cars - Will This Destroy Many of the American Muscle Cars

The Clunker Bill
The Clunker Bill For Cars - Will This Destroy Many of the American Muscle Cars

Future generations may not be able to able to shop for cars that are part of their youth like older people can. Most of us can purchase cars that we drove in as teenagers, which are the old classic muscle cars. There is a new bill that has pass the "clunkers" bill this is where the Government will give rebates if you turn in cars that do not get great gas mileage.

If you trade in a "clunker" for a newer car that gets better gas mileage you may qualify for that rebate.

What they consider a clunker is a gas-guzzler which is a vehicle that gets less than 18 MPG. This would cover many vehicles SUV's, Trucks, and muscle cars. This could cover many of the classic vehicles and the vehicles that may be considered classic in a few years off the roads permanently.

Cars are part of our history. Cars have always held a soft spot in many of our heats and souls, what will happen to these vehicles that they consider clunkers? In order for this bill to pass, the dealers would have to crush them and get the clunkers off the roads. This bill is designed to replace the old model cars which they are hoping will be 1984 or later with the newer fuel efficient vehicles which will get better fuel mileage. This will take off the road many dependable vehicles that are not only classics but will be desirable in the future as vehicles that are sought after for collectors of automobiles.
